URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Last year, the Stamp Out Hunger Drive provided more than 27,000 meals to our neighbors facing food insecurity. Joining ciLiving with details on this year’s drive from the Eastern Illinois Food Bank is communication and engagement manager, Sophie Becker.

Stamp Out Hunger Drive is an impactful way for people to feed those facing hunger without even leaving their house. Last year, donations in our community provided more than 27,000 meals to our neighbors.

This year’s drive is made possible with support from United Way and AFL-CIO. In early May, people will start seeing the yellow donation bags dropped off by their mail carriers. They can put non-perishable food donations in these bags and set them by their mailbox on Saturday, May 11 to be picked up.

We will also have volunteer opportunities to sort donations at the post office on May 11, as well as sorting donations after they arrive in our warehouse. Anyone interested can visit mobilize.us/eifoodbank/ for more information!

Anyone unable to participate by donating food can visit eifoodbank.org to donate. Thanks to a generous friend of the foodbank, all donations this spring are being matched up to $25,000, which means every $1 donated provides six meals.

If the bags arrive in time, I’ll bring one of the plastic donation bags the community will receive from mail carriers. If they don’t arrive, no props!

EIF is the primary food source for a network of 160 pantries throughout 18 counties. We are continuing to see an increase in need, and community support is vital in our mission of alleviating hunger.
